Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya, is the brain child of Shri K.S. Venkataraman, a leading legal luminary of Tiruchirapalli, and Shri K.S. Ganapathy, a teacher, both of them grandsons of Rao Bahadur K.S. Ganapathy Iyer. Shri M.S. Venkatarangan, a teacher non pareil, who was serving the Ramakrishna Tapovanam, Tiruparaithurai, provided the initial impetus and inspiration in this noble venture, goading the brothers into fruitful action. The ambition was to make the school an academic socio-cultural nerve-centre for the children drawn from Tiruvanaikoil, Srirangam and the surrounding areas. The school was located in the housing colony developed by the founders in Tiruvanaikoil.
Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya saw the light of day on the 5th of June, 1975. It had an auspicious beginning with Swamy Santhanantha of Ramakrishna Tapovanam, Tiruparaithurai, lighting the Kuthuvilakku, to mark the occasion. The strength of the Vidyalaya in June, 1976 was 168 students in the LKG class to Std. III. The Vidyalaya added Stds. IV to VI in June, 1976. The student strength of the Vidyalaya has since been growing steadily. Initially the campus blue-print was for a student strength of 1600. When the strength reached 1860 in 2009-2010, the Vidyalaya desired to restrict the classroom strength, and the admission of students into the school was restricted to 120 at the LKG level. The Present student strength is 1450. The hardship caused to several students and their parents in this connection was inevitable, as it was a result of sound academic pragmatism. The school made a humble beginning, housing the classrooms in temporary structures, with thatched roofing. In 1976 itself, an application was made to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, for the approval of the middle school syllabus. In 1979, the Vidyalaya sought affiliation to the CBSE, and the first batch of 13 students sat for the All India Secondary School Examination in March, 1981. With dedication to and love for teaching, the qualified teachers of the Vidyalaya toiled hard preparing the children for the Board Examinations and, as a natural corollary, all the 13 students were successful in the Board Examinations. The die had been cast and there has been no looking back, and, till date 41 batches of students have been presented to the Board Examinations and the performance of the students has been steadily improving. The Vidyalaya is proud to have produced 100 per cent results with commendably high average marks in the Board Examinations. Thanks to the untiring efforts of the teachers, the academic attainment and the overall personality development of the students have been impressive. The efforts continue and will continue, as the goal desired is perfection.
